Each individual book in the Draw Your Own Encyclopaedia series forms a subject-specific chapter of the overall encyclopaedia. The books provide brief introductions to a number of different areas connected to a specific subject, along with quick facts, questions you can answer and, at the end, a pop quiz where you can test the knowledge which you have gained by reading the book. In addition, prompts and space is provided to allow the reader to add their own pictures, and through this become the illustrator of their own encyclopaedia chapter. Thus, these books are designed to encourage children to think about the world around them, and to learn how to search for information on the internet and from books, while having a little bit of fun!
You can see an example of how this information is presented in the image below, which shows a double-page spread from the first book in the series (Draw Your Own Encyclopaedia Mammals). It shows how a specific topic is introduced using an opening question at the top of the left-hand page, followed by a short paragraph about this topic. On the facing page, is a prompt for an accompanying image which can be drawn in the space provided, Finally, interspersed amongst this information are quick facts that provide additional information related to the topic.
Note For Educators: If you wish to use any of the contents of this book for educational purposes, an educational licence (which allows you to legally photocopy pages to create handouts) can be purchased from here. Ideas for classroom activities to accompany each of these book can be found here, too. Finally, if your school is in Scotland, we can provide author-led classroom visits based around a number of these books. You can find out more about this here.
***New for 2019***: We are now in the process of producing and publishing Classroom Editions of these books specifically for educators which are in an A4 format which can be easily photocopied to create classroom handouts, and which provide a range of additional materials.
